Outdoor Rugs With Indoor Style

Today's outdoor rugs have come a long way from what was not long ago a slim selection of ho hum choices. Innovation in technology and new resources for recycled and new materials have produced some exciting results in these rugs with more vibrant colors, intricate weave patterns and design, and practical care and maintenance.

Bamboo, Polypropylene, and acrylic fibers such as DuraCord are a few of the material choices being used for outdoor rugs today. Each material offers it's own unique features.

If natural materials appeal to you and green is your thing, then bamboo is a great choice. It is not, however, recommended outdoors unless it is in a protected area such as an outdoor porch. Use caution when purchasing a bamboo rug as the rug quality will only be as good as the raw bamboo used to make it. As a general rule, older stalks of bamboo are stronger and more durable than the younger shoots. A reputable dealer should be able to provide you with that information to help you choose the desired quality and make an informed decision.

Still green, and more durable, is the new recycled polypropylene rugs handmade from recycled milk cartons. They are naturally mold and mildew resistant-perfect for the outdoor environment. Once processed, they are colored with high UV resistant, beautifully vibrant dyes and woven in intricate patterns ranging from classic oriental designs to modern contemporary. Because the process is similar to a flat-weave rug, there is no need for a backing. Care is simple, hose off periodically to remove dirt and grime.

DuraCord acrylic or nylon, is also a great choice for outdoor durability with an indoor look. Often handmade, while being constructed of synthetic materials they have the look and feel of natural materials. They are UV resistent, non-absorbent, mold and mildew resistent, albeit, usually a bit pricier than the above choices.

Regardless of which one you choose, an appropriate weather-resistant rug is one of the most effective accessories you can buy to pull together all of the elements of your garden room and help define the space.
