Metal Garden Bench Finish

The Completed Project

Garden Bench Finish: To prepare the project for the paint finish required much cleaning up to remove the "slag" or welding residue from the metal where the parts were connected. I used a Makita 4 1/2" grinder. One tip when grinding is to remember always to keep the protective plate toward your body to ensure that the sparks fly away from you. The better you become at the welding, the less clean up is required.

I chose automotive spray paint for two reasons. I wanted to have a metallic finish for aesthetic reasons. I also wanted a finish that would stand up to the outdoor elements under all weather conditions in any geographic location. Automotive Paint provided the perfect solution for both. I chose a metallic green finish which I found at a local auto parts supply store. The application went on smoothly and required only 2 coats for complete coverage. Shown below are a couple of close up pictures of the sculptural element as finished.

If you have been following this project from the original design conception, you will remember that the design conception calls for a french mattress that will top the bench. For now, I draped a duvet and matching pillow from my Sage Garden Style soft furnishings collection to show the finished bench project.
